Downsizing to save money

Most of the world has been stuck in some form of lock down, spending countless hours cooped up in their houses or apartments. Most of us have accumulated a lot of stuff that we really don't need, and we're seeing that more and more as this drags on. So let's talk about downsizing.

If you look around and see yourself surrounded by things you never use, then it's time to think about selling them. The idea of a yard sale has been around forever, and with all the online options if should be no problem to get rid of most of the clutter. Let's say you've taken that step, and you are now in a house/apartment that looks bare compared to what it once did. You are going to fill it back up again, bottom line.

What if you moved into a smaller place? With less room to store things, deciding what to purchase takes on a whole new light. This practice has been used in the tiny house community for years and years now, but it can be applied to others as well. Take a minute and think about how much space you really need. It's far less than what you are probably paying for right now.

Saving money and making money are viewed in two different lights, but they shouldn't be. If I don't spend $10 today on lunch, then compared to yesterday when I did, I made $10. Saving money, and the mindset that goes along with being frugal, is important to our generation as one of the means for us to get ahead. Our parent's generation had it easy, but they will never admit that. Our generation lacks the same opportunities for earning money, and it's showing.

Most of our parent's generation owns their own homes - our generation will be lucky if we can afford to live in an apartment with roommates. It's sobering to think about. So consider downsizing as a way to decrease your monthly rent/mortgage payments and to keep you from accumulating so many things. If you've never heard of tiny houses, you should really check them out, and a simple google search will yield more results than you can imagine.
