Top 10 Camping Gear/Gadgets 2020

Cassie and I love to be outdoors, and having the right gear makes our trips that much more enjoyable. Here are our Top 10 favorite pieces of Camping Gear / Gadgets for February 2020.

10.) LuminAID PackLite Hero 2-in-1 Phone Charging Lantern: Light while camping is a necessity. The ability to charge your phone is something that isn't really new to the camping world. Having all of those things together in a lightweight and collapsible package is where this little guy shines. Pun intended. What makes the LuminAID different from it's competitors is the reliability of it's solar cell. Other similar products claim to charge as fast as the LuminAID; they simply do not. The Hero charges your phone twice off a single charge, can charge fully in 16 hours of direct sunlight. Sound like a crazy long charge time? How about 100 hours of continuous light on low? One idea is to buy 2 and cycle between them on anything longer than a 2 day trip. At 300 lumens you won't be disappointed in the light.

9.) Furthertry Inflatable Sleeping Pad: The website claims it's self inflating; it is not, but it does not take too many breaths to get it inflated.

I was surprised at how comfortable this was, especially as a side sleeper, but my shoulder and hip never touched the ground through this. I'm a bigger guy, 6' 2" and 240 lbs. and it holds me no problem with room to spare. It rolls up into a small bag for easy packability, and the durable material still feels soft on your skin. A good night's sleep is vital on camping and hiking trips, and I believe this is one of my best purchases yet.

8.) Gold Armour Mummy Sleeping Bag: This 3-4 season bag is insanely comfortable, and at 6' 2" I still have room past my feet at the bottom. The insulation isn't suitable for extreme cold weather environments like mountaintop camping without additional insulating layers, but early spring and late fall is where this bag shines. The zipper is strong and well made, and will only catch the inner lining if you force it. The face completely closes for those who like to completely shut themselves off from the cold, and a convenient phone pocket keeps everything in place inside the bag. The compression bag with rainfly work extremely well for those who like to stuff their bags instead of rolling. All in all this bag is well worth the money.

7.) Lixada Foldable Camp Stoves: Whether you need a portable stove for just yourself or for your entire family, Lixada has you covered. While I do agree that titanium stoves have their place in camp cooking, there is nothing wrong with the cheaper stainless steel stoves for beginners or those who are not ultralight camping. The model shown is 1.52 lbs. and is roughly 9"x6.5"x2" folded. Fuel it with sticks and dry deadfall for an efficient cooking method that is safe and can be used nearly anywhere. If you are in a windy environment you can build a wind block to keep your flame from dancing too badly or buy a portable windscreen. Never use a camp stove like this in your tent!

6.) iMBAPrice Tent Fan and Light: If you're like me then having a fan is a necessity. This versatile camp necessity can be a hanging fan/lantern, or a stand alone ground fan. Powered by 2 D-Cell batteries, the light can be ran for a maximum of 37 hours or you can run the fan on low for up to 50 hours on low. Using both will drain the batteries faster (aprrox. 16), but with a few extra batteries this can run all night over the course of a weekend camping trip. Hang it from the tent's accessory strap and read into the early hours or enjoy a cooling breeze on warm nights. Keep in mind this item is not waterproof and must be used under cover.

5.) Field & Stream 3 Person Lodge Tent: Take a basic done tent with a mesh top and add a Rainfly that adds a vestibule area that closes up to protect your gear from the elements without taking up floorspace. Genius. The interior of this tent is large enough to hold a queen size air mattress if that's your thing, or has enough room to fit 3 people with room to spare. The orange color guarantees you won't lose sight of it, and the floor panel is durable and waterproof. There is even a mesh accessory 'hammock' against the ceiling with the standard hanging strap. You will need to replace the tent pegs, as all included pegs with almost every tent produced are garbage.

4.) Plusinno Telescopic Rod & Reel Combo: Before you start laughing, yes I use this. I bought one on my last trip to Grand Cayman and Cassie and I were catching Moray Eels off the dock. They like to fight. This little champion held it's own, flexing but never breaking. The model I have fully extends to 6' 2" which is literally exactly my size, and does not hassle you with preloaded line. Simply spool up a small pound test and get your baits in the water. This is perfect for that lazy camping trip and could provide you with a tasty catch for dinner. The small collapsed size makes it ideal to strap to your pack, and the reel is sturdy enough for panfish all the way up to medium sized trout, but Cassie and I have landed eel and bass with it and it really is great fun.

3.) Suaoki 60W Folding Solar Panel: At just under 5 lbs. this solar panel kit is extremely packable. Combined with the Suaoki 200Wh Solar Power Station you can get a full charge in 7 hours of direct sunlight. Constant power for weeklong trips into the backcountry with drones or camera equipment? Check. Hang it from a tree or lay it in the grass. This panel is compatible with other brands of power stations including the Goal Zero 150 and 400, Rockpals 250W, and others.

2.) Suaoki 200Wh Solar Power Station: Everyone has seen the portable power banks that people carry around to keep their phone charged. This is a supersized version of that which also has the ability to charge from the Suaoki 60w Solar Panel kit. Featuring multiple USB ports, no battery memory issues, and the ability to charge your phone 17+ times, this little beast is ideal for camping. Other solar generators have an onboard 110-volt outlet; Suaoki chose to keep power pack portable and lightweight. Anyone who runs drones or camera equipment on long trips outdoors will love this, as it charges a GoPro 6.0 over 25 times or the DJI Spark 6+ times. Combine this with the brand's solar panel kit and you can have it fully charged in 7 hours of direct sunlight.

1.) Therm-a-Rest Compressible Travel Pillow: It is a known fact that a sucky pillow leads to a sucky night's sleep. This is without a doubt the best investment you can make for your next camping trip. 16.5" x 27" and 4" thick, it's large enough to be comfortable and small enough to compress down for easy packing. Carry 2, one for your head and 1 to go between your knees if you're a side sleeper like me. This bad boy is actually machine washable, which is pretty uncommon for camping pillows, and contains upcycled Therm-a-Rest mattress material. Don't skimp on your comfort; camping is about relaxing and recharging.
